The Disney parks are known for many things! Delicious snacks, amazing attractions, and classic characters are just a few that come to mind.

They’re also known for the heat and how quickly it can ruin your day if you’re unprepared. Hong Kong Disneyland is now implementing new changes to try and beat the heat this year!
This year, Hong Kong’s summer weather has had periods of extreme heat, high humidity, and even storms! That sounds like a local Florida theme park we know. To combat the weather, Hong Kong Disneyland is making some changes. First, they introdued and exclusive ticket called “Summer Chill.” This is a 4 PM entry ticket offer for Hong Kong residents. They can get in the park from 4 PM until close to avoid the worst periods of weather during the day. Tickets cost $480 HKD, which is roughly $62 USD.

They have also focused on weather-conscious designs throughout the park. The resort has used a combination of environmental designs and infrastructure enhancements to help combat the weather. Disney Imagineers studied sunlight, temperature, humidity, and winds in their design decisions for some big changes. Wayfinders’ Table in Adventureland is a great example of this!

Disney designed this new quick service with things like sun exposure and ventilation in mind for guests. They did this by using hard roof materials and specific airflow planning to reduce heat buildup. This can also serve as a shelter from rain for guests and Cast Members! Disney also uses canopies, trees, and fans at the Moana: A Homecoming Celebration show for the same reasons.

It’s not just about new infrastructure though! Hong Kong Disneyland has also focused on improving airflow with the use of energy-efficient ceiling fans. These fans are located at entrances and ticketing areas. In the queue, Disney has upgraded their axial fans to enhance airflow while you’re in line. There are roughly 860 fans in the park now. They also have mobile units they can move around so they can be flexible as new needs pop up. They also added these portable units in different outdoor zones! You can also find mist cooling fans at outdoor locations, plus extra shade has been added to lines and dining areas.

Need some water? No problem! There are 40 free water dispensers across the resort and almost half of those dispense water 50% faster. This keeps lines shorter and guests more hydrated. Okay, the Disney World folks are getting jealous right now!

Disney is also making sure its Cast Members are being taken care of! The park is continuously reviewing and updating operational choices for those Cast Members working outdoors. The outdoor Cast Members are wearing outdoor-specific costumes that have been designed with breathable, moisture-wicking materials. They’re also given extra breaks, hydration support, and access to cooling facilities as needed. These measures are all taken into account during times of extreme weather conditions. The Disney Ambassadors have even given our electrolyte drink powder and chilled water to these Cast Members working in outdoor areas.

Finally, Disney is adding “cooling moments” into its storytelling! Guests can go between indoor attractions, dining venues, and entertainment options throughout the resort to help during those harsh conditions. They’re adding entertainment like the Pixar Summer Fest, which invites guests to beat the heat while enjoying entertainment. There’s a Pixar Water Play Street Party where Pixar characters are participating in a water parade. Guests can also enjoy Pixar-inspired treats like a Lime Dole Whip with Pineapple Slush Float at Jessie’s Snack Roundup, Monsters, Inc.-inspired Mike Wazowski Ice Cream Bar, Toy Story Alien Ice Cream Bar, and Sulley-inspired Mint Chocolate Flavored Soft Serve
Stay Cool!
These are just a few ways that Disney is working to beat the heat in Hong Kong, which we love! Can Disney World start doing the same? We will wait (semi) patiently. They are working on outsmarting the weather over in Orlando and other U.S. locations through their newest weather app updates!

Disney partnered with AccuWeather to create the Disney Weather Check powered by the AccuWeather mobile app. The new app addition allows access to real-time weather updates and location-specific notifications. The change is available to those visiting Walt Disney World Resort, Disneyland Resort, Aulani, a Disney Resort and Spa, Disney’s Vero Beach Resort, and Disney’s Hilton Head Island Resort. This gives you area-specific updates rather than a general alert, which can be really helpful in the parks!

This new app change, but those Hong Kong updates just show how Disney is working to be even smarter than Mother Nature. Maybe that famous faux dome will become a reality. As always, be sure to keep following Magical Guides for more Disney news, updates, and more.
