A holiday weekend is upon us, and you know what that means…crowds. Now, we’re not just talking about crowds in Disney World. You’ll also be dealing with crowds pretty much everywhere you travel, including on the roads and at airports.

But just how busy will things get throughout the Fourth of July weekend? Well, we have an answer…and you might not like it if you’re traveling soon.

Planning guide for the ultimate Disney vacation

According to the TSA, security checkpoints at airports are expecting to screen nearly 18.7 million air travelers throughout the Fourth of July holiday weekend. The agency has said that it’s “well prepared” to handle all those people throughout this period, which runs from June 30th through July 6th. The highest passenger volume was expected to occur on July 2nd.

“We’re thrilled so many passengers are planning travel to enjoy America’s milestone 250th birthday and celebrate the greatest nation on earth,” said TSA Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Administrator Ha Nguyen McNeill. “TSA security checkpoints are fully staffed and prepared to welcome these travelers and handle the large passenger volumes expected during the Fourth of July holiday period.

The TSA also recently added some new technology at many airports ahead of the FIFA World Cup. McNeill said, “TSA is working closely with federal, state and local partners to safeguard the traveling public and manage security for large-scale public events. Thanks to the dedication of our screening officers and our industry and airport partners, travelers are experiencing faster screening lanes and enhanced technologies that deliver the highest levels of security.”

With that being said, though, you’ll probably want to make sure to arrive at the airport to give yourself plenty of time to get through security checkpoints. It might also come in handy to have TSA PreCheck, although you can also use free programs at some airports to expedite the security process, like MCO Reserve at Orlando International Airport, which allows you to reserve a time to go through a special, shorter security lane.
