NEWS: WARNING Released for U.S. Citizens Traveling to Mexico Right Now

These days, international travel often requires a good deal of planning in advance.

If you live in the United States of America, the U.S. Embassy websites often offer travel advisories and tips for each country, so that you know how to prepare yourself before you hop on that international flight. And with the FIFA World Cup coming up soon, the United States has released a travel advisory for Mexico.

The U.S. Embassy & Consulates in Mexico has released a warning about traveling to Mexico for the FIFA World Cup. The dates for this event are June 11th-July 5th, 2026. The website has posted some top issues to be aware of when traveling to Mexico, and there is now a Level 2 Travel Advisory for the country, which means visitors should “exercise increased caution.”

So what should you note when traveling to Mexico? Here’s the list from the Embassy:

• Do not bring any weapons or ammunition into Mexico. It is a serious crime, and you could face severe penalties. Permits for gun ownership in the United States are not valid in Mexico.
• Drug possession or importation of drugs, including medical marijuana, is illegal in Mexico. It can lead to long jail sentences or fines. This includes all forms of marijuana, including for medical use with a permit, even if allowed where you live in the United States.
• It is illegal to bring e-cigarettes and vaping liquids into Mexico.
• Check your bags and clothing pockets before travel if you regularly use items prohibited in Mexico. Bringing in banned items can result in serious penalties even if accidental.

The Level 2 Travel Advisory is due to terrorism, crime, and kidnapping. Some areas have increased risk. On the map below, yellow areas are places where you should “exercise increased caution,” orange areas are spaces where you should “reconsider travel,” and the burgundy spots mark “do not travel” zones.

The U.S. Embassy encourages you to not travel between cities after dark and to not travel alone. Only rely on dispatched vehicles from regulated taxi stands or app-based services like Uber or Cabify and do not wave down taxis in the street. Emergency services are limited in remote areas.

If you’re heading to Mexico soon, these are the actions the embassy encourages you to take:

• Read the Mexico Travel Advisory and Country Information Page for travel details and entry requirements.
• Enroll in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program to receive safety updates.
• Download and print our contact information pocket guide or save it to your phone to use the clickable links. This handy tool can help you reach us in an emergency.
• Bring your passport and make sure it hasn’t expired. You cannot board an international flight without a passport.
• Limit the amount of cash you carry, be cautious when withdrawing funds from an ATM, and avoid isolated ATMs.
• Use official airport taxi stands, or app-based services like Uber and Cabify.
• Tell your friends and family about your travel plans, especially if traveling alone. Drive only during daylight hours.
• In Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Cozumel, or other areas in Quintana Roo, download the “Guest Assist” app for emergency services and assistance.
• Call 911 in an emergency.
• Contact the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate if you need assistance.
