A wave of cold weather across the U.S. is causing major travel disruptions, and Orlando International Airport is feeling the effects in a big way. With dozens of delays and over a hundred cancellations already reported today, travelers heading to Disney World and back home are facing unexpected changes to their plans. Here’s what’s happening, why it matters, and what you should do if you’re traveling right now!

If you’re traveling to or from Orlando this week, there’s a good chance you’ve already felt the ripple effects of the recent cold weather sweeping across the country. While Central Florida itself isn’t dealing with snow or ice, widespread winter storms in other parts of the U.S. are creating a domino effect that’s seriously impacting flights in and out of Orlando International Airport (MCO).

Let’s take a flight!

As of 9 AM EST, MCO has already reported 80 flight delays and a staggering 124 cancellations, according to the latest airport data. And because so many flights into Orlando originate from colder regions currently experiencing winter weather, disruptions in those cities are directly affecting travelers headed to Disney World, Universal, and beyond. Even if the skies over Florida look perfectly clear, aircraft and crew availability issues elsewhere can still throw schedules completely off.

By 10 AM EST, the delay numbers climbed significantly to 121 flight delays, and we only expect this number to keep rising throughout the day.

For vacationers, this can mean missed connections, delayed arrivals, or, in some cases, having flights canceled altogether. It’s especially stressful for families arriving for long-planned theme park trips or travelers trying to head home after a magical getaway. Unfortunately, winter travel is one of the most unpredictable seasons of the year, and when weather systems stretch across multiple states, even major hubs like Orlando aren’t immune.

If you’re flying this week, it’s more important than ever to monitor your airline’s app, sign up for real-time flight alerts, build extra buffer time into your travel plans, and even have an alternative plan of travel lined up if possible. Travelers should also consider booking earlier flights in the day (which are less likely to be delayed), packing essentials in carry-on bags, and keeping flexible dining or park plans in case arrival times shift.

While flight delays and cancellations are never fun, staying informed and prepared can make a huge difference. Keep an eye on current airport conditions, check your airline’s rebooking policies, and don’t hesitate to reach out for help adjusting travel plans if needed. With a little flexibility and patience, you can still keep your trip on track, even when winter weather throws a curveball into your vacation plans.
