As a former Disney World Cast Member, I’ve learned that while Lightning Lanes can save you time, it’s not always worth the cost.

If you are planning a trip to Disney World, you might think that skipping the lines by purchasing Lightning Lane is an automatic yes. But as someone who used to work in the parks, I can tell you that is not always true. Before you hit that purchase button before your next vacation, here are five reasons Lightning Lane might not be worth it for you.

1. If You Have Little Ones

You might assume you need Lightning Lane if you have little kids in your party because it can decrease your wait time in the queues; however, there are a few scenarios where it’s not worth it. At EPCOT and Disney’s Hollywood Studios, if your little one is under 34″, there is very little for them to ride — that’s not saying there aren’t things for them to do! Many of the attractions under Lightning Lane Multi Pass at these parks have a height restriction, and you might find yourself feeling like you aren’t getting your money’s worth if you are focused on doing rides as a family.

2. If You’re Prioritizing Dining

If you are someone who wants to eat at multiple sit-down restaurants throughout your day, you’re going to want to think twice about purchasing Lightning Lane. These restaurants can easily take 60-90 minutes out of your day, and that will take away time from riding attractions. If you are more focused on enjoying meals, you might feel rushed with Lightning Lane. We would focus on your dining reservations and hit your must-do attractions at rope drop or in the evenings.

3. If You Plan to Park Hop

You might think having Lightning Lane can help you if you’re park hopping because once you use your first Lightning Lane, you can select an attraction at a different park. However, it’s good to know that switching parks can actually eat up a lot of time, especially if you are using Disney transportation. If you’re trying to hit only a few rides at each park, using Lightning Lane can be a good strategy. However, if you want to “do everything” in a park and then hop, we wouldn’t recommend Lightning Lane.

4. If You’re at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

In 2026, Animal Kingdom is under some major construction, leaving just a handful of attractions open on Lightning Lane. We believe that right now, you can skip the Lightning Lane Multi Pass here, and if you want, purchase a Lightning Lane Single Pass for Flight of Passage, as this will be the highest wait time in the park. You can easily knock out the other big attractions like Expedition Everest and Kilimanjaro Safaris in the morning with low waits.

5. If You Want Flexibility and Freedom

One of the biggest gripes is that Lightning Lanes lock you into a schedule. It can feel restricting to have to be somewhere at a certain time. What if something comes up and you want to soak in the parade magic, or you want a snack? With Lightning Lane, you are confined to a schedule. Annual Passholders, or locals, are likely to want to have the flexibility in their day, since they can visit often. Having to be at a specific place at a specific time can turn your chill day into a stress-fueled march across the park.
