The Disney Skyliner has fans. A lot of them. And honestly, we get it. It’s fast, it’s pretty, it feels a little bit like your transportation got upgraded from “theme park bus” to “European vacation fever dream,” and it connects EPCOT and Disney’s Hollywood Studios with Disney’s Art of Animation Resort, Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort, Disney’s Pop Century Resort, and Disney’s Riviera Resort. These days, it generally starts running one hour before Early Theme Park Entry at EPCOT or Hollywood Studios and usually keeps going until 90 minutes after those parks close.
Who’s up for a ride on the Skyliner?
But here’s the bad news: the Skyliner is not some flawless floating chariot sent from the heavens to fix all your Disney transportation problems. It is still public transportation. Public transportation that happens to dangle in the sky. And that means it comes with a few very real headaches you should know about before you build your whole vacation strategy around it.
Admittedly, we’re BIG fans of the Skyliner. When everything is in proper working order, it can be a fast, efficient mode of transportation that saves time compared to driving. Unfortunately, things don’t always run smoothly because, well, it’s impossible to control the weather or build unlimited Skyliner gondolas. Now, let’s dive into some of the biggest problems with the Skyliner.
If your plan is to rope drop Hollywood Studios from a Skyliner resort, congratulations, along with half of Walt Disney World, you have had the exact same idea.
The Skyliner can move a lot of people, and when it’s humming along, the line often looks worse than it really is. But “looks worse than it really is” is still not the same thing as “walk right on.” Early in the morning and right after park close, especially after Fantasmic! or EPCOT’s nighttime crowd starts pouring out, you can absolutely run into long waits. And because the Skyliner is tied so closely to EPCOT and Hollywood Studios operations, those rush windows are not exactly rare little unicorn moments.
Ugh — another line!
Again, be prepared to wait in line — you won’t be the only ones headed out when the parks close. That said, the line tends to move pretty quickly since the Skyliner doesn’t ever actually stop moving, so don’t panic when you encounter a long line.
This is Florida. The sky has moods.
The Skyliner closes in bad weather
Disney’s Skyliner runs weather permitting, and lightning in the area can shut it down temporarily. Rain alone does not necessarily stop service, but storms absolutely can, which is especially relevant in the season when Central Florida likes to schedule an afternoon thunder tantrum with almost professional consistency. When that happens, your breezy little sky commute can turn into a pivot-to-the-bus moment.

That does not mean the system is bad. It means the system is vulnerable to the very thing Florida manufactures in bulk: chaos clouds.
You can still take the EPCOT bus, but it’s not nearby!
In the summer, storms happen pretty much EVERY day, meaning there’s at least one hour that the Skyliner is unavailable every time there’s a storm.
This is the part people forget until they’re sweaty, overstimulated, and dragging a souvenir lightsaber through a queue.

Not every Skyliner trip is a straight shot. If you’re going between Hollywood Studios and EPCOT, you’ll transfer at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort. The same goes for many trips from Pop Century and Art of Animation, since Caribbean Beach functions as the main hub. Riviera has its own station on the EPCOT line, which is nice for Riviera guests, but for plenty of other riders, the Skyliner is not a magical teleportation device. It is a connect-and-transfer situation.

That may not sound like a huge deal on paper, but in real life it means extra time, extra walking, and one more place for your travel day to get a little crunchy.
Many people strongly dislike sharing a Skyliner gondola with another party. When it’s especially busy, you’re likely going to be seated with another family, depending on the size of your party. Think of it like sharing a table at a restaurant — it’s pretty close quarters!

Note that you can ask to ride alone, though Cast Members may not be able to 100% guarantee you a private cabin. That said, Disney tries to be as accommodating as they can whenever possible.
If the idea of being suspended way up in the air freaks you out, don’t ride the Skyliner. Just don’t do it.

While Disney has a reputation for being VERY cautious and safe, some people may choose not to ride out of fear of heights. When you really think about it, it’s pretty crazy that those big, heavy gondolas can move so quickly through the air on just that thin cable.

Also, keep in mind that the Skyliner may temporarily stop without warning at any time, so if you don’t like the idea of being stuck (for ANY period of time — even just a few minutes), you might not want to use the Skyliner.
Disney’s transportation tools are better than they used to be, and the My Disney Experience app can help with routes and stop locations for Disney transportation. That’s useful. Genuinely. Especially if your brain turns into warm pudding after 14,000 steps and a school bread.
But there is still not a live Skyliner status checker in the My Disney Experience app. So if the system is down, delayed, or having a little weather-related identity crisis, the app is not going to swoop in and save you. You’ll typically see signs at or near the station if the Skyliner is unavailable. In other words: yes, technology exists, but not always in the exact way you want it to.
If you’re planning a late-January trip and choosing your resort because “we’ll just use the Skyliner everywhere,” pause dramatically and maybe clutch a decorative throw pillow.

Disney posted a Skyliner refurbishment from January 25 through January 31, 2026, and has already posted another closure from January 24 through January 30, 2027, with complimentary bus service available during those windows. planDisney has also referred to yearly refurbishments for the system. So while Disney does not promise a closure every single January forever and ever amen, late January has very much become a “double check before you book” time of year for Skyliner-dependent travelers.
This is one of those sneaky little details that can absolutely trip people up. If you rode the Skyliner to EPCOT, you will not be able to use it to get back to the EPCOT parking lot after the park has closed. So if you parked at EPCOT and then got clever with transportation, you need to have a backup plan. The Skyliner is fabulous for getting around, but it is not a magic reset button that returns you to your car just because you believe in yourself.

There’s also a current operational wrinkle on nights when EPCOT has Extended Evening Hours. The Skyliner closes one hour after those hours end, but service from International Gateway during that late-night period is limited to Disney’s Riviera Resort. The route connecting Caribbean Beach, Pop Century, and Art of Animation is unavailable then. Translation: late-night Skyliner service is not always as wide open as people assume.
The Disney Skyliner is still one of the coolest transportation systems at Disney World. It’s scenic, it’s often efficient, and when it’s working perfectly, it can feel like a little bonus attraction you didn’t have to Lightning Lane. But the bad news is that it comes with strings attached. Or, more accurately, cables.
