We are getting HYPED for the new land coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios!
©Disney
We recently got some major updates about Monstropolis, the new land themed to Monsters, Inc. Disney has revealed the backstory of the land and some of the offerings, including Harryhausen’s restaurant and The Glob Theater. But there’s still so much left to learn, and construction progress has been fascinating. Now, we’ve got a look to share behind those construction walls!
Walt Disney Imagineering shared a new video on YouTube giving behind-the-scenes looks into a few ongoing projects, and it includes our first peek behind the construction walls of Monstropolis!
The video mentions three different projects. Let’s dive into each one!
Starting things out in Monstropolis, we see Disney Imagineer Scott Mallwitz standing in front of scaffolding in Hollywood Studios. He shares some of the backstory of the land that Disney recently revealed.

There are a few video clips that show different construction angles around the land. Many of the buildings are covered in tarps as materials are brought in and facade work is in progress.
©Disney
Speaking of facades, we can see work being done on the former front of PizzeRizzo. Scaffolding is up around this building as workers transform the space to be more monster-like.
©Disney
We also got a glimpse at the building that will house the new suspended roller coaster. The scale on the Monsters, Inc. building is MASSIVE — just look how tall it is compared to the people in the clip!
©Disney
It looks as though much of the old pavement has been removed to make way for new landscaping. That’s usually one of the later things we see done on Disney projects.

Of course, Disney just confirmed that there will be a Harryhausen’s location in Monstropolis, along with several shops and other themed buildings. We can’t wait to see what all of this looks like with the Monsters, Inc.-inspired architecture.

If you’re just as hyped as we are for Harryhausen’s, check out our new t-shirt design on the Magical Guides Store! We’ll definitely be wearing this one come opening day.

But Monstropolis wasn’t the only thing we saw in the video!
Nearby in Hollywood Studios, The Walt Disney Studios is a new land taking over the old home of Animation Courtyard. The land itself is already open, but its feature attraction, The Magic of Disney Animation, is set to open later this summer.
©Disney
Inside this new attraction will be a playground for littles inspired by Alice in Wonderland. We’ve been eagerly anticipating a peek at this playground ever since it was announced, and now we’ve got a look inside!
©Disney
The pieces in the video clips have a very similar Mary Blair art style with that flat, hand-drawn animation look to them. Imagineer Perri Dinnerman gives a tour of some of the playground’s features.

There’s an interactive wall with decorative marbles…

…hand-painted clouds up in the sky…

…and they’ve even themed the building column supports! When this space was constructed originally, it was an office. Those support beams can’t just be removed, so they got creative with decorating them. This one is a tree!
©Disney
Dinnerman noted that one of her favorite features was this piece that had yet to be installed — it allows you to paint the roses white or red! We can’t wait to find all the hidden nods to Alice in Wonderland here.

We’ll keep you updated with an opening date for this playground when Disney announces it.
The other project shown in the video was more of a touch-up. This clip showcased the Goofy statue that resides on the Disney Magic cruise ship. He was recently removed to get a refresh on his paint job!
©Disney
Once the job was complete during the Disney Magic’s dry dock, Goofy was reinstalled. It’s so neat to see how they perform maintenance on the cruise ships!

That’s a wrap on the updates that Imagineering shared today, but we’ll keep you in the loop with any more behind-the-scenes sneak peeks. Subscribe to our newsletter for the latest.
