It’s not uncommon for rides and attractions in Disney World to close for refurbishment. In fact, we see it frequently so that they can get safety updates and touch-ups.
Typhoon Lagoon Water Park
Now, it’s looking like a popular Disney World water slide is going to be added to that list. Why? Disney just filed a permit for construction on Humunga Kowabunga at Typhoon Lagoon Water Park.
Humunga Kowabunga has been the subject of multiple lawsuits in recent years due to guest injuries. It’s a fast-paced slide with a steep drop, so it’s not exactly the tamest of Disney rides. But could Disney be changing it or toning it down?
Humunga Kowabunga
A notice of commencement for construction on Humunga Kowabunga was filed with Orange County, Florida, on January 6th, 2026. The notice has a company called Proslide Technology, Inc. as the contractor for the construction.

Disney hasn’t shared details yet about any changes coming to this ride, but Typhoon Lagoon is closing for its seasonal refurbishment starting on February 15th, 2026. During that closure, Blizzard Beach will reopen to take guests who are interested in a water park day. Typhoon Lagoon is set to reopen on May 26th, though, so if the ride construction is timed with the park’s closure, that’s only three months for the work to get done.
