Disney has floated a lot of ambitious ideas over the years, but not every one of them made it past the drawing board.

Some existed only as concept art before quietly disappearing. Others were officially announced, generated plenty of buzz, and then slowly faded out without much explanation. And a few still sting, because we really wanted to see them happen. Here’s a look at five Disney World projects that were planned, hyped up, and ultimately scrapped.
This was supposed to be EPCOT’s answer to a modern-day interactive hub—something for the younger crowd, full of games, character encounters, and tech-forward activities. Disney announced the Play! Pavilion back in 2019, taking over the old Wonders of Life building. It sounded like a kid-friendly arcade-meets-exhibit-meets-Instagram backdrop with characters like Edna Mode and Wreck-It Ralph making appearances.

And then…nothing.

The construction walls were up forever. Concept art made the rounds. And now? It’s totally off the map. Disney quietly removed all mention of it, and it’s looking more and more like the Play! Pavilion has been permanently shelved. What was hyped as a “digital city” has become another mystery dome in EPCOT with no clear future.
This one was a gut-punch. In 2019, Disney officially announced a Mary Poppins-themed attraction for the UK Pavilion in EPCOT. Not just a meet-and-greet or overlay—a full-on ride. The plan was to let guests stroll down Cherry Tree Lane and enter the Banks family home for a “supercalifragilistic” experience. Fans (us included) were so ready for this.

But after the 2020 shutdown, Disney quietly paused development. And in 2021, they removed it from their official plans. Since then, it’s been radio silence. No Cherry Tree Lane. No umbrella rides. No Mary. We’re still not over it.
If you’ve ever walked past that big castle mural in EPCOT’s Germany Pavilion and wondered if there was supposed to be a ride there…you’re right.
This could have been a ride!
Germany was originally going to have its own boat ride. The Rhine River Cruise would’ve taken guests on a scenic journey through German folklore, castles, and the countryside. Think “It’s a Small World” vibes but all German-themed.

The building was partially built. The loading area still exists—just behind those doors under the mural. But the ride? Never happened. Budget cuts in the ‘80s pushed it to the back burner, and it’s been in “maybe someday” limbo ever since. The space is mostly used for storage now, and unless Disney suddenly decides to resurrect it, we probably won’t ever get to sail the Rhine in EPCOT.
Animal Kingdom is all about animals, right? Well…sort of. Originally, the park was going to be divided into three sections: real animals, extinct animals (which we got with DinoLand), and mythical animals. That third one? Never happened. Beastly Kingdom was supposed to feature dragons, unicorns, and other legendary creatures in a lush fantasy land. Think “Fantasia” meets “The Lord of the Rings.”

It was going to have a dragon-themed roller coaster, a Fantasia-inspired boat ride, and an entire land that explored the mythic side of the animal world. But as the park’s budget tightened, Beastly Kingdom was scrapped before opening day. And later, the land where it was supposed to go became home to Pandora – The World of Avatar.

Cool? Yes. But part of us still wishes we could meet a fire-breathing dragon instead of a banshee.
By the late ‘80s, Disney was all-in on the Muppets. An acquisition deal was on the table, and the Muppets were supposed to be a major part of the then-brand-new Disney-MGM Studios (now Hollywood Studios). One of the biggest planned additions? The Great Muppet Movie Ride.

This attraction would’ve been a full-blown parody of The Great Movie Ride—except with Gonzo, Kermit, and the rest of the gang botching their way through famous movie scenes. There were plans to spoof everything from Peter Pan and Indiana Jones to Frankenstein and alien sci-fi movies. Jim Henson himself called it “the flip side” of the Studio experience—total chaos, Muppet-style.

It was part of a much larger Muppet-themed area that would’ve included a restaurant and more shows beyond Muppet*Vision 3D. But in 1990, just weeks after The Muppets at Walt Disney World TV special aired, Jim Henson passed away suddenly. The acquisition fell apart, and with it, the Great Muppet Movie Ride.

There’s no shortage of blue-sky ideas at Disney. Some crash and burn. Some quietly disappear. And a few sting forever because they sounded so good. So next time you’re wandering the parks at Disney World, just remember — you’re walking past some serious “what if” history.
