Pirates of the Caribbean almost skipped Disney World. That would've been a big mistake.

While Pirates of the Caribbean is now a staple at Magic Kingdom, it wasn't always meant to be there. Surprisingly, the iconic ride wasn't initially planned for Disney World.

If you ask me, leaving it out would have been a massive misstep. As a huge fan of the swashbuckling adventure, I can't imagine an Adventureland without it. Pirates and Haunted Mansion vie as my top picks!

When Magic Kingdom first opened in 1971, guests were stunned to find the beloved Pirates ride absent despite Walt Disney’s earlier enthusiasm. Their disappointment led to the ride’s quick introduction.

At first, Disney brass believed Floridians wouldn't be keen on a pirate-themed attraction being so near the actual Caribbean. Instead, they planned the Western River Expedition — including ideas for Big Thunder Mountain.

However, strong demand prevailed, and Pirates of the Caribbean finally opened on December 15, 1973. It turns out, Floridians really do love pirates, something that’s celebrated annually in Tampa's Gasparilla Pirate Festival, honoring the legend of José Gaspar.

Clearly, Pirates has rightfully earned its place in Magic Kingdom. Sometimes, Disney truly does listen to its fans!

What's your take on Pirates of the Caribbean being such a centerpiece of Magic Kingdom? Would you have missed it if it weren't there?
