In the past 24 hours, the U.S. has been grappling with the TikTok ban.
With social media platform TikTok now banned (U.S. users receive a notification stating it's banned), the ripple effects are clear. Besides TikTok, ByteDance's other apps, CapCut and Lemon8, are banned too. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a Marvel digital game, Marvel Snap, has also faced a ban.
Yes, a game featuring Marvel, a Disney license, is banned in the U.S. due to its connection with ByteDance. Even though the American company, Second Dinner Studios, developed it, its publisher, Nuverse, is owned by ByteDance. Thus, Marvel Snap is currently inaccessible to U.S. users, and visiting its site yields a "not available in your country" message.
Second Dinner Studios stated, “Unfortunately, Marvel Snap is temporarily unavailable in U.S. app stores and unplayable in the U.S. This outage was unforeseen. We're working to restore the game and will update soon.”
Marvel Snap is a well-received digital card game with Marvel characters like Spider-Man and Hulk. But for now, it's banned in the U.S.
Disney's game licensing isn't likely to feel financial impacts, yet game fans are already affected, leaving the future uncertain.
We'll monitor the situation, so stay tuned for updates.
