Last year was eventful: the Steamboat Willie version of Mickey Mouse entering the public domain sparked quick actions from creators.

We saw the announcement of a Steamboat Willie horror movie that had been in development, leveraging Mickey’s public domain status. Next, a game company revealed a new horror game titled Infestation: Origin, a co-op survival title. Adult Swim also shared a humorous video about Mickey's newfound availability. Soon, another version of Mickey Mouse will also lose its copyright, joining the public domain.

The Karnival Kid, where Mickey speaks for the first time, will enter the public domain in 2025. Several other Mickey shorts will also become public domain, allowing their use without needing Disney's permission.

High-profile characters like Popeye will also enter the public domain in 2025, allowing use of only this specific version that debuted in 1929—not the spinach-eating, grumbly-voiced portrayal or Robin Williams’ 1980 movie version.

Tintin, another iconic character, will enter the public domain in 2025 as well, though the version with bright red hair remains copyrighted and includes the one from Spielberg’s 2011 film, The Adventures of Tintin.

Other notable works entering the public domain in 2025 include William Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury, John Steinbeck’s A Cup of Gold, Virginia Woolf’s essay “A Room of One’s Own,” Alfred Hitchcock’s Blackmail, John Ford’s The Black Watch, and Cecil B. DeMille’s Dynamite.
