The U.S. airline industry has been experiencing significant changes lately. We’re still processing Southwest Airlines' decision to implement assigned seating and end their “Bags Fly Free” policy. Other airlines are adjusting as well. For instance, American Airlines recently revamped its rewards program and is set to introduce free Wi-Fi on most flights starting January 2026, although this benefit will only be available to loyalty program members. This means American will become the final major U.S. airline to offer complimentary Wi-Fi.
American Airlines intends to have internet service on 90% of its fleet, claiming it will provide more flights with connectivity than any other U.S. carrier. Up until now, American has charged between $10 for a single flight to $599 for an annual Wi-Fi pass. Notably, AT&T will sponsor this new service to help reduce installation costs.
Previously, Delta Airlines and United Airlines have already offered free Wi-Fi, with Delta introducing it in 2023 and United gradually rolling it out by the end of 2025. Despite past issues with in-flight internet reliability, many airlines are striving to enhance the experience through partnerships with satellite providers.
