I need to discuss something I recently learned about — Rogue waves. Yes, really.

I often go on cruises—sometimes for work, like a recent trip on the new Disney Treasure cruise ship, and sometimes for fun. But now that I know these massive, unexpected waves can appear suddenly, I'm reconsidering my vacation plans.

Let me explain. My family does an annual holiday cruise, with over 20 people across three generations in 10 cabins. We don’t spend on holiday presents and avoid unnecessary gifts. This year’s trip was planned for months. However, after reading a disturbing article about rogue waves due to a recent incident, some relatives are questioning if we should proceed.

The recent incident involved a Royal Caribbean ship, Anthem of the Seas, struck by a rogue wave in the North Atlantic. The 30-foot waves caused significant damage, though fortunately, no fatalities were reported.

Before you worry, rogue waves are extremely rare. Though they’re dangerous and unpredictable, they’re not something you’d likely encounter on a typical cruise. Only about a 1 in 100 chance exists for encountering one, and modern ships are built to withstand tough conditions.

To stay safe, you should remain informed about weather forecasts, familiarize yourself with ship safety features, choose larger or calmer-route ships, stay inside during rough seas, and always follow the crew’s instructions.

Despite knowing about rogue waves, I’m still excited about my Caribbean cruise. Cruises are safe, and these waves are so rare that I won’t let it spoil my New Year’s plans. Every vacation has risks, but that’s part of the adventure. So, if you just learned about rogue waves, don’t panic. Stay informed, and listen to the crew.
