Many Americans are concerned about their travel plans this year due to the enforcement of the Real ID requirement.

So, what exactly is a Real ID? It’s a more secure form of identification, usually distinguished by a star on your driver’s license. While the deadline to have a Real ID for flying is finally here, there’s no need to stress—here’s what you need to understand.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem assures travelers that lacking a Real ID by this week's deadline won’t prevent them from flying. However, they may experience extra screening. The aim is to make this transition smooth.

Currently, 81% of Americans have a Real ID, but passports and tribal IDs remain valid for travel. Even if you don’t have a Real ID, you’ll still be able to fly, albeit with additional verification.

Driver services are extending hours to assist in obtaining Real IDs before Wednesday’s deadline. Initially proposed in 2005 as part of post-9/11 reforms, the Real ID requirement has been delayed multiple times.

We’re keeping an eye on how this change impacts travelers, so keep an ear to the ground for updates. What’s your take on this requirement? Share your thoughts!
