We’ve got some fantastic news for people who often drive to Disney World, whether they drive into the parks frequently, come from surrounding areas, or rent a car for their vacation.
Welcome to Disney World!
There are a few different roads around the backside of Disney World (and by that, we mean the back roads that aren’t as commonly used by most guests) that get pretty backed up, especially during the hours around park open and park close. However, Ficquette Road is notoriously one of the worst, but things will be changing soon to fix that — it means more construction, but widening this road will be well worth it!
Ficquette Road helps connect Horizon West to Windermere behind Magic Kingdom. In 2019, it carried about 17,000 vehicles a day, but now? That number has grown to 22,000, and 20 years from now, that number is expected to grow to 38,000. With those numbers, it’s very important that construction on this road begins now, to get ahead of the traffic getting even worse.

Starting in early 2026, construction will begin to widen Ficquette Road from the Reams Road/Summerlake Park Boulevard intersection to near Ingelnook Drive, according to Spectrum News 13. It’ll expand to four lanes, and a roundabout will replace the congested Fiquette/Reams/Summerlake Park intersection.

Stephen Herron, a frequent traveler on the road, said in a statement that he often has to add 15-20 minutes to a trip just in case the area is bad, as he’s been stuck there for 20-25 minutes before. The only downside? Well, this construction is planned to take about two years, so it’s going to be rough still for that amount of time, but by early 2028, it should be much improved!

Not ready to deal with the construction? Don’t forget to take advantage of the free transportation at your Disney World hotel. Even if you drive to your hotel, you can park your car for free and then take the buses, monorail, Skyliner, boats, and more to get from point A to point B. While you may still be dealing with traffic, at least you can use your phone to plan what food you’ll grab while waiting.
