Disney has been ramping up its sequels and live-action remakes lately, and whether you like it or not, there is a LOT on the horizon.

It’s no secret that a live-action Tangled movie is in the works at Disney, but what ever happened with the planned sequel to the original Tangled? Well, according to a new report from The Direct, plans for Tangled 2 were scrapped after Disney failed to come up with a compelling enough story to make it work. Here’s everything we know.

Planning guide for the ultimate Disney vacation

Nathan Greno, director of the original 2010 Tangled movie, told The Direct that while discussions about a sequel took place, the studio couldn’t make sense of a continuous story.

Flynn and Rapunzel

Greno was asked if any ideas had ever been developed at Disney for a Tangled sequel, and he said that there had previously been discussions. He explained that continuing Rapunzel’s story is a “uniquely difficult creative challenge,” and drew comparison to other iconic Disney movies.

“No… Again, I’m not against sequels. There was, I will say, after we finished ‘Tangled’… It’s a tricky place, because I’ll put it this way: once Pinocchio becomes a real boy, what else is there to say? Once the Beast becomes a human, what else is there to say?”

He continued, saying that the creative team made a genuine attempt at a story, but that no one at Disney could come up with a story worth telling.

“We actually did an off-site at Disney, and we got the original team together, and we really all talked about it for hours, and we kind of walked away saying, ‘We couldn’t find a story worth telling,'” Greeno said.

Instead of leaving fans in the lurch, the team decided to make the 2012 short, Tangled Ever After, which follows Rapunzel’s and Flynn Rider’s wedding day.

Greeno commented on it, saying, “And so, while I love those characters, and… There was a short that we did the wedding [in], because people come and ask, like, ‘Where’s the wedding?’ So we did do the wedding, because that felt natural. But in general, yeah, there just wasn’t a story that I could find.”

Swingin’

But, for those still wanting to get their Tangled fix, the live-action remake is still very much in the works. It’s been confirmed that Teagan Croft will portray Rapunzel and Milo Manheim will bring Flynn Rider to life, along with Kathryn Hahn stepping in to play Mother Gothel — something that fans have been begging for.

Originally, the production was eying Scarlett Johansson for the role, but she backed away due to her upcoming heavy production schedules with Batman II and The Exorcist reboot. Once that announcement came out, the internet very quickly began hoping for Hahn to be offered the role. Now, that dream has come true.

Michael Gracey (best known for directing The Greatest Showman) is still attached to direct the feature, and the script is written by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and is based on the 2010 animated film of the same name. Kristin Burr will produce the film, while Lucy Kitada will executive produce.
