Southwest Airlines is shaking things up, aren't they? If you're not up to speed on their recent announcements—read on! We're summing up all the changes Southwest Airlines revealed so you’ll know what to expect in the months ahead.

For years, Southwest has delighted passengers with its open seating policy and two free checked bags. But big changes are on the horizon. Come July 2024, say goodbye to open seating as reserved seating is set to take center stage. Early 2026 will mark the rollout of assigned seats with the option to pay for seat selection, alongside a new premium seating option boasting extra legroom.

The beloved checked bag policy is also updating. For flights starting May 28th, 2025, only Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred Members and Business Select fare passengers will continue to enjoy two free checked bags. Others will receive one free bag, while some customers need to pay for checked luggage. The Rapid Rewards points system is also recalibrating, offering more rewards for Business Select fares while reducing points on other fare types.

Southwest Airlines is striving to reward loyal customers and engage with cost-conscious travelers. Still, it leaves us wondering how these changes will impact passenger loyalty and numbers.
