When the news emerged that Muppets Courtyard would be removed from Disney’s Hollywood Studios to make way for a new Monsters, Inc. Land, Muppets fans were disheartened.

A particular attraction, Muppet*Vision 3D, garnered significant attention. Disney indicated they “are having creative conversations and exploring ways to preserve the film and other parts of the experience for fans to enjoy in the future.” The Jim Henson Company also expressed their commitment to preserving the film, leading many fans to remain optimistic about the show's future. Jim Henson’s legacy lives on through the Muppets, but now it appears the studio lot is being sold to a well-known celebrity!

According to the Los Angeles Times, the Jim Henson Company Lot has been listed for sale since the late creator’s family decided to consolidate both the Jim Henson Company and Jim Henson’s Creature Shop (located in Burbank).

The sale piqued the interest of singer-songwriter John Mayer, who maintains an office on the lot, and director McG (Joseph McGinty Nichol). They are now negotiating to purchase the property for $40 million. Larry Solters, Mayer’s representative, confirmed, “John Mayer and McG are under contract to purchase Henson Studios.”

Solters has not revealed how Mayer and McG intend to utilize the lot, which has primarily served as a music recording studio. The lot boasts a rich history, starting with comic and actor Charlie Chaplin establishing it as a movie studio complex in 1917. In 1966, it was sold to Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss, and in 1999, the Jim Henson Company acquired the property, commissioning a statue of Kermit as Charlie Chaplin’s Tramp at the entrance. The LA Times noted, “The property was designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 1969.”
