Change is a hallmark of Disney theme parks, where new rides often replace old favorites. This tradition spans decades, ensuring parks remain fresh and exciting.
While original attractions are mostly lost to time, cherished only in fan memories and faded photos, Disney's creative Imagineers occasionally hide easter eggs in new attractions. These fun nods honor the rides that once were and offer fans a delightful sense of nostalgia at Walt Disney World.
Take, for example, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh at the Magic Kingdom. There's a charming tribute to Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride: a photo of Mr. Toad handing the deed to Owl within the Fantasyland attraction.
At EPCOT's Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, can't-miss references to Ellen’s Energy Adventure appear. Written in Xandarian, the script on a column inside hints at Ellen, Alex Trebek, and Einstein’s famed equation. Plus, the coaster features an electric guitar rendition of the old Universe of Energy theme. Listen closely for Star-Lord’s “Big Bang!” as a nod to Ellen’s Energy Adventure dialogue.
In EPCOT’s World Showcase, Frozen Ever After pays homage to its predecessor, Maelstrom, with recycled puffins and troll tapestries in the Royal Sommerhus queue.
Over at Hollywood Studios, Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway features a carnival scene with a poster for “The Great Moving Ride,” a clever salute to The Great Movie Ride.
These are just a few examples of how Imagineers incorporate "Secret Shoutouts" into newer attractions. What do you think of these subtle nods to the past? Let us know your favorite below!
